Poster produced for Southern Railway (SR) as part of its 'Winter Pastimes' series, a series of four posters focusing on cultural activities. This poster is promoting rail travel to whist drives, card parties and social clubs and is illustrated with game boards, ches pieces, playing cards and dice. As the text beneath the image indicates, the artist executed the illustration in tempera, here called 'the medium of the 16th century painters'. In fact, oil had supplanted tempera as the medium of choice by master painters back in the 15th century. Artwork by Helen Ray Marshall. Dimensions: 1016 mm x 635 mm.
