Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway, promoting rail travel to the Yorkshire village of Coxwold, where Lawrence Sterne (1713-1768), author of the 18th century comic novel 'Tristram Shandy' (published 1759-1767), was vicar. Sterne lived at Shandy Hall in Coxwold from 1760 to 1768, and in this poster, 'Uncle Toby', 'Corporal Trim' and 'Widow Wadman' (characters from the novel) are shown outside the Hall itself. Artwork by Austin Cooper (1890-1964). Printed by McCorquodale & Co Ltd, London.
