A photograph of 20 year old May Burns, an accounts clerk at a ship repair yard at Hebburn on Tyne, preparing to climb a mountain at Wasdale Head as part of a girls' Outward Bound Course. The 1954 course, run by the Outward Bound Centre in Eskdale, Cumbria, was only the second such course run for girls. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers.
