Description
"A photograph of Siegfried Owen Davies (1886-1972), a candidate in the Merthyr by-election, canvassing miners with their pit pony at Craig Pit, Pontreback, taken by Tomlin for the Daily Herald newspaper. Davies was very familiar with the working conditions for miners, having himself started work in a colliery at the age of 12. He was the Chief Organiser and Unemployment Adviser for the South Wales Mining Federation and went on to win the election. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers."
