Pilot TV 37 television receiver ('suitcase' set), c 1948.
The Pilot TV 37 television set cost $99 US dollars when new. This 3-inch screen set was the first to go on sale in the USA for under $100, at a time when larger sets sold for $300 or more. They were a popular gift for students going to university. The set came in a suitcase-style carrying case which also held the folding aerial. Although designed to work on the USA 525 line system, some were brought in to the UK and converted to 405 lines. The initial low cost of the sets made it worth the effort to convert.
