Description
Workers making barrels at Doncaster carriage and wagon works. Barrels were used by the railways to transport a variety of liquids, including beer. Doncaster works, known as the 'Plant Works' opened in 1853, making and repairing locomotives and rolling stock for the Great Northern Railway. At this time the works employed around 3500 workers.
