Workers constructing carriages at Doncaster carriage works. At this time carriages were made from wood but some were starting to be manufactured from iron or steel. Carriages were usually lit with gas. However, electric lighting was becoming more common as gas lighting was dangerous and could potentially cause a fire. Carriages had corridors by this time and it was possible to walk from one carriage to another.
