Brass door plate belonging to Henry Hill Hickman (1800-1830). Hickman was an early pioneer of anaesthesia. After studying medicine at Edinburgh University Hickman was admitted as a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in London, 5 May 1820. Hickman set up practice in Ludlow, where he controversially experimented on animals, successfully carrying out surgery whilst they were under anaesthetic. Hickman was unappreciated during his short life which ended with death from tuberculosis in 1830. His work has since been positively reappraised.
