Platinum print photograph by Frederick Hollyer (1837-1933) of Samuel Smiles (1812-1904). Born in Scotland, Smiles was a writer, political reformer and moralist. His best known work is 'Self Help', written in 1859. He also produced biographies of great men who through hard graft found success; they included 'Life of George Stephenson' (1875), 'Lives of the Engineers' (1861) and a work on Josiah Wedgewood (1894).
