Description
LNER steam locomotive 4-6-2 No 4472 'Flying Scotsman' crossing Scarborough bridge that spans the River Ouse at York, on route to Scarborough. The Flying Scotsman was the first express passenger locomotive. It was built by the newly formed London & North Eastern Railway in 1923. It was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley. In 1934 the Flying Scotsman was the first steam locomotive to reach a speed of 100mph.
