A photograph of the Moon, taken by Lewis Morris Rutherfurd [1816-1892] in about 1858. An American, Rutherfurd was inspired by the daguerreotypes of the Moon made by Whipple [1822-1891] and Bond [1825-1865] in 1851. In 1856 he had his own observatory built and spent the rest of his life working there, becoming a major figure in astronomical photography of the nineteenth century. Rutherfurd produced many photographs that were widely admired for both their beauty and their scientific contribution to lunar geology.
