Locomotive, being dug out of a snow drift, about 1935. Snow is a particular hazard to the railways, because it can come suddenly and can drift quickly, burying trains, making wheels slip and causing severe delays. However it can be cleared fast, and snowploughs mounted on locomotives were first used on the railways in the 1850s.
