Driver and fireman on the footplate of locomotive, hauling the 'Flying Scotsman' train at Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, by Cyril Herbert, 9 October 1934. Driving a steam locomotive was hard and dirty work, with drivers having to work long hours with a great deal of responsibility on their shoulders. However, drivers enjoyed the work and the companionship and teamwork they got from working with their fireman.
