Driver and fireman on the footplate of a Schools class 4-6-0 locomotive number 30913 Christ's Hospital by Patrick Ransome-Wallis, about 1953. Driving a steam locomotive was hard and dirty work, with drivers having to work long hours with a great deal of responsibility on their shoulders. However, steam traction was being phased out at this time, and working conditions improved with changes to diesel and electric traction.
