Platform 3 at York station, by Chris Hogg, 8 July 1991. Crowds of people are joining an Inter-City train, probably bound for London. These High Speed Trains were launched in 1974 and brought about significant improvements in speed and comfort on most of British Rail's main lines. They had diesel power cars at each end of the train. They could run at a top speed of 140 miles per hour, their average speed being about 95 mph.
