DVDs, which were released in 1996, are metal-coated plastic discs used to store digital data. The audio format DVD was introduced in 1999 and was the successor to the compact disc (CD). DVDs can store as much as 26 times the capacity of a CD. DVD video discs hold digitised films and have better graphics and greater resolution than CDs. Like other optical discs they are read by a laser beam, and are not degraded by continual playing.
