Class 21a 2-6-0 locomotive number 183 with a suburban passenger train, by Patrick Ransome-Wallis, 1954. Most Norwegian steam locomotives were built in Oslo, but the Norwegian railways also used German and Swiss locomotives. They needed to be economical as coal was not mined in Norway and had to be imported. Because of Norway's mountainous terrain the locomotives also needed to be able to run on steep gradients and around sharp bends.
