A4 class 4-6-2 locomotive number 60022 The Mallard, designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and built at Doncaster Works. On 3 July 1938, at Stoke Bank between Grantham and Peterborough, The Mallard travelled at 125 miles per hour, breaking the world speed record for a steam locomotive. The Mallard was withdrawn from service in 1963 and is now part of the National Railway Museum's collection. It still holds the world record for steam traction.
