It is likely coal is being poured onto the boat to be shipped abroad. A wide variety of goods were shipped from this dock. It was equipped with cranes and warehouses to store and move goods easily. London's docks had expanded rapidly at the start of the 19th century. The coming of the railways helped this expansion by transporting goods to and from the docks.
