Graphic representation of George, a robot built from scrap Wellington bombers in 1949. Artwork exclusively designed for the Robots Exhibition, 2017 at the Science Museum London.Designed and built in the UK by Tony Sale, in 1949, George was one of the UK's first humanoid robots. He was widely praised by newspaper reporters as a model for the domestic robot of the future or even as a machine capable of fighting tomorrow's wars. George was the fifth of a series of robots built by Tony Sale, starting at the age of 12. He was constructed from scrap aluminium while Sale served in the Royal Air Force, and used an advanced remote control system that relied on Morse Code instructions sent from a hand-held transmitter.
