A photograph of a woman drying flags in a factory, taken by Nixon for the Daily Herald newspaper on 6 April, 1945. These national flags bear the faces of the Allied war leaders Winston Churchill (1874-1965) and Franklin D Roosevelt (1882-1945). With the end of the war against Germany in sight, Britain prepared to celebrate VE - Victory in Europe - Day. This factory on Commercial Road in the East End of London is busy making flags and banners for the celebration. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers.
