A photograph of workers in a flag-making factory, taken by Nixon for the Daily Herald newspaper on 6 April, 1945. With the end of the war against Germany in sight, Britain was preparing to celebrate VE - Victory in Europe - Day. These factory workers on Commercial Road in the East End of London are busy making flags and banners for the celebration. In the background, national flags bear the faces of the Allied war leaders - Josef Stalin (1879-1953), Winston Churchill (1874-1965) and Franklin D Roosevelt (1882-1945). This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers.
