Joseph Patrick Kennedy (1888-1969), American Ambassador to Britain, presenting awards to a group of British Naval officers. Photograph taken by Sayers for the Daily Herald newspaper on 18 November, 1938. Ambassador Kennedy is reading a message of thanks to the British officers from HMS 'Bee' and HMS 'Ladybird' who had helped rescue survivors from the USS 'Paney'. An American gunboat, the Paney was bombed and sunk by Japanese aircraft in China on 12 December 1937. This incident brought the two countries close to war.
