A photograph of a sailor at the Royal Naval School of Photography, taken by Barnet Saidman for the Daily Herald newspaper on 16 February, 1938. The school, situated at HMS Excellent, Whale Island, Portsmouth, ran courses on photography and film. The sailor in the photograph is holding a folding strut camera with a focal plane shutter, typically used by pres photographers at the time. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers.
