A photograph of three coal miners from Louisa Colliery, Annfield Plain, County Durham, taken by Abell for the Daily Herald newspaper in 1947. Taken the day after the worst disaster in the pit's history, this photograph shows Joe Shanley, Harry Robinson and William Younger. These men were considered heroes after rescuing the bodies of ten of their colleagues, five of whom survived. A firedamp explosion caused the death of 22 miners. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers.
