A photograph of a coal miner, John Howcroft, taken by Hicklin for the Daily Herald newspaper in 1949. This photograph was taken at Brackley Colliery, near Walkden in Lancashire. John Howcroft, aged 67, was one of the oldest miners in the pit, having started work there aged just 13. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers.
