A photograph of two miners, Arthur Kirkland and Ted Jackson, having a smoke at the top of the mine shaft, taken by Spencer for the Daily Herald newspaper in 1956. Bamford Closes Colliery, at Norden near Edenfield in Lancashire was the smallest coal mine in England. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers.
