This photograph was taken at Hamilton House during a demonstration by H A Thompson, a well known lecturer on maths education. The children seem to be enjoying their maths exercise. Invented by Georges Cuisenaire (1891-1976), a Belgian primary school teacher, Cuisenaire rods are a set of rectangular rods in graduated lengths and different colours used to explain mathematical concepts. Photograph taken by Tony Eyles for the Daily Herald newspaper in 1962.
