A photograph of a man on a hunger march, taken by James Jarche for the Daily Herald newspaper on 22 February, 1934. Carrying a few basic possessions on his back, this man pauses for rest at a first aid station. A group of interested schoolchildren on bicycles look on in the background. Hunger marches were a feature of the economic depression in Britain during the late 1920s and early 1930s. Marchers protested against widespread unemployment and inadequate welfare provision.
