Photograph by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe (1853-1941) of Whitby's new number one lifeboat, the 'Robert and Mary Ellis', and its crew, North Yorkshire, 2 December, 1881. Below the photograph the text reads: 'Presented to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution by Mrs Ellis, of York, in memory of her late Husband, the Rev Robert Ellis, Vicar of Birdsall'. Several small boys have turned out for the occasion. Sutcliffe is best known for his naturalistic and spontaneous style of photography, especially his portrayals of Whitby's fishing community. He was a founder member of The Linked Ring Brotherhood and was made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society in 1941.
