Mezzotint engraving of a lamplighter with humorous text by Mr Dibdin. Plate 69, St Paul's Church Yard, London for Carington Bowles, published 9 November 1790. Taken from a collection of prints and books documenting the early history of the gas industry amased by Sir Arthur Elton. British streets were lit by oil lamps until the introduction of gas lighting by German entrepeneur, Frederick Albert Winsor (d 1830) in around 1807.
