Description
The line between Liverpool and Manchester was 31 miles (50 km) long and was built under the supervision of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway's (LMR) chief engineer George Stephenson (1781-1848). Opened on 15 September 1830, it was the world's first intercity railway. The Moorish Arch at Edge Hill, Liverpool, was near to the entrance of the single tunnel on the line.
