Description
Engraving made in 1799 by Bartolozzi after Russell of a portrait of Robert John Thornton (c 1768-1837) with a scene below of the 'Entrance into that most noble Public Charity and admirable Medical Establishment Guy's Hospital' showing a woman holding her head in her hands whilst two men carry a wounded man on a stretcher through the hospital gates. Thornton studied at Guy's Hospital, London. His published works include 'New Illustration of the Sexual System of Linnaeus' and 'The British Flora'.
