Description
Engraving by J Houbraken made in 1748 after a painting by G Kneller of Sir Samuel Garth (1661-1719). Garth was Gulstonian lecturer in 1694, Harveian orator in 1697 and was knighted in 1714. As well as serving as physician to George I (1660-1727), Garth wrote occasional verse including the satirical poem 'The Dispensary' (1699), which voices his opinions in opposition to apothecaries and the scheme of outpatient rooms.
