Description
Plate taken from the 'Illustrated London News'. Vice Admiral Sir George Tryon (1832-1893), Commander of the British Mediterranean Fleet in 1893 had instructed the ships under his command to perform elaborate manoeuvres. While performing a interweaving pattern with other members of the fleet, the battleship Victoria, collided with the Camperdown, capsized and sank, losing 358 of her crew in the proces. This disaster illustrated one of the drawbacks of the ironclad battleships.
