Description
Engraved plate from 'Voyage autour du monde' ('Voyage round the world') by Louis Isidore Duperrey (1826). The engraving shows an establishment surrounded by a sturdy wooden fence, built by English Christian misionaries near the village of Kikikidi in what is now New Zealand. Duperrey (1786-1865), a French marine hydrographer, was the commander of the 'Coquille' during its voyage (1822-1825) to Chile, Peru, Polynesia, the Molucca Islands (Indonesia), New Ireland (Papua New Guinea) and Australia.
