Description
Engraving from 'Voyage autour du monde' ('Voyage round the world') by Louis Isidore Duperrey (1826). The engraving shows a bird's eye view of a house built on stilts over water at the harbour or haven of Doreri in the Doberai Peninsula, on what is now the Indonesian part of the island of New Guinea. Duperrey (1786-1865), a French marine hydrographer, was the commander of the 'Coquille' during its voyage (1822-1825) to Chile, Peru, Polynesia, the Molucca Islands (Indonesia), New Ireland (Papua New Guinea) and Australia.
