Description

Engraved plate 30 from 'Voyage autour du monde' ('Voyage round the world') by Louis Isidore Duperrey (1826). Illustrated are hats, a headdres made from casowary feathers, an ornament and amulet, a bracelet, a necklace, a large knife, ordinary combs and a war comb. 'Terre des Papous' (Land of the Papuans) is probably the Doberai Peninsula, on the Indonesian part of the island of New Guinea. Duperrey (1786-1865), a French marine hydrographer, was the commander of the 'Coquille' during its voyage (1822-1825) to Chile, Peru, Polynesia, the Molucca Islands (Indonesia), New Ireland (Papua New Guinea) and Australia.
