Oil on canvas portrait of by Alexander Craig, showing Lancashire-born chemist John Mercer (1791-1866). Mercer was responsible for discovering and improving the quality of a number of dyes, but is best remembered for inventing a proces which gives cotton a lustre resembling silk - a proces known as 'mercerisation'.
