Description
Engraving by E Scriven after an original painting by J Allen. Joseph Dyer (1780-1871), born in Connecticut, USA, patented an improvement of Danforth's roving frame for cotton-spinning. He was joint founder of the'Manchester Guardian' newspaper in 1821, and helped establish the Royal Institution and the Mechanics' Institution at Manchester. He was also an abolitionist.
