Description
Photograph by Ronald Franks of Sir Barnes Neville Wallis (1887-1979), English aeronautical designer and inventor of the bouncing bomb. Wallis designed the R100 airship for Vickers, and went on to produce aircraft designs that combined lightnes with strength - applying this to the 'Wellesley' and 'Wellington' bombers. Following the succes of his bouncing bomb, the authorities allowed Wallis to produce two heavy, penetration bombs - the 'Tallboy' and the 'Grand Slam'.
