Description
Gowland (d 1875) drove the steam locomotives 'Royal George' and 'Sans Pareil', both designed by Timothy Hackworth. 'Sans Pareil' was entered in the Rainhill Trials in 1829, a competition to establish the most efficient locomotive for railway haulage; the competition was won by Robert Stephenson's locomotive 'Rocket'.
