Description
Carte de visite photograph by W & D Downey of Newcastle. Hooker (1817-1911) succeeded his father as director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, London. A friend of Darwin's, he supported Darwin's theory of evolution. Hooker went on several expeditions and wrote on the flora of New Zealand, Antarctica and India. In 1854 he published 'Himalayan Journals'. His major work is 'Genera plantarum'.
