Lithograph by Spy of Gladstone (1827-1902), subtitled 'Chemistry & Optics'. Gladstone gave Christmas Lectures at the Royal Institution, between 1874 and 1877, on the Voltaic battery and the chemistry of fire. He was President of the Physical Society during the same period.
