Copper plate engraving by Simon Charles Miger (1736-1820) of Charles X (1757-1836). A pro-royalist portrait of the King of France from 1824-30, brother of Louis XVI and Louis XVIII, whom he succeeded. Charles X was a reactionary force in French politics during and after the French Revolution in 1789. He headed the ultraroyalist opposition during the reign of Louis XVIII, which triumphed after the asasination in 1820 of Charles's son, the duc de Berry. Charles succeeded the throne in 1824 and attempted to reestablish elements of the ancien rEgime. The bourgeoisie and the pres attacked his cabinet, which resigned in 1827. Charles abdicated his throne after the July Revolution of 1830 and the duc d'OrlEans succeeded him as King Louis Philippe.
