Description
Drypoint engraving by Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-1677) made in 1666, executed after an earlier painting by Henrick Van der Borcht (1583-1660). Allen (c 1588-1653) was considered one of the greatest dial and scientific instrument makers of his time. He established his shop near Fleet Street, London, in 1606. This portrait shows him surrounded by instruments, including dividers, a sundial, compas and measuring device. Allen was elected Master of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1636.
