Description
Stipple engraving by W Nutter after a miniature painted by Samuel Shelley, used as the frontispiece to 'A Compendious System of Astronomy' (1797) by Mrs Bryan (active 1797-1815). Bryan is shown with her daughters amidst the scientific instruments she would have used. She taught astronomy and natural philosophy to girls at her school in Blackheath, London, at a time when women were largely self-taught. She also wrote elementary, practical books that gave a general grounding in astronomy and physics.
