Description
Photograph taken from an album of images compiled by English motor car manufacturer and aviator Charles Stewart Rolls (1877-1910). It shows Rolls at the 1903 of the prestigious Gordon Bennett Trophy race, which was first held in 1900, and was a forerunner of the Grand Prix. Rolls was well known on the motor racing circuit, competing in many of the races of the time. He failed to be selected for the 1903 Gordon Bennett race, coming second in an elimination heat held on the Duke of Portland's estate at Welbeck in Nottinghamshire. Rolls founded Rolls-Royce Ltd with Sir Frederick Henry Royce in 1906, creating one of the world's most famous marques.
