Photograph taken from an album of prints compiled by Charles Stewart Rolls (1877-1910), English motorist, motor car manufacturer and aviator, showing a procesion of cars in front of Hendre, the Rolls family home. The Automobile Club was founded in 1897, and in 1900 staged the 1000 Mile Trial, a 14 day tour of Britain aimed at promoting the merits of the motor car as a practical method of long-distance transport. As a leading pioneer of motoring, Rolls was a prominent member of the club. He was well known on the motor racing circuit, competing in many of the races of the time, and in 1906 founded Rolls-Royce Ltd with Sir Frederick Henry Royce (1863-1933), creating one of the world's most famous marques.
