Engraving by J Chapman after a painting by S Drummond. Alexander Aubert FRS (1730-1805) built private observatories at Loampit Hill near Deptford, London, in which he housed astronomical instruments by Bird, Dollond, Ramsden and Short. There he observed the transit of Venus in 1769 and Mercury in 1786. In 1788 he built the Highbury House observatory with engineer John Smeaton (1724-1794). Aubert's mechanical knowledge led him to be appointed chairman of the trustees for the completion of Ramsgate Harbour in Kent. From the 'European Magazine', published by J Sewell, (London, 1798).
